Our technology is based on the integration of advanced ion exchange (AIX) base materials, reactor and absorber design, and the chemistry of functionalisation of the substrates.

The AIX technology is complemented by on-going R&D to improve ion loading capacity, adsorption kinetics, selectivity to target ions, and stability in operation.

Our base materials range from polymer fibres that have a wide range of chemical resistance, through silica granules that have high pore volume and fast reaction kinetics, to conventional polymer and silica beads that have been purified to remove all traces of extractable compounds that can contaminate process fluids.

A key feature of the technology is the range of proprietary specialist chelating and ion exchange functionality that is available over the entire product range. These specialist materials are designed to offer high selectivity to target ions, while retaining high ion loading capacity.

Johnson Matthey AIX is designed to function as a Process Technology, rather than just an ion exchange or chelating material, by the integration of base material, functionality with absorber and reactor design. Process integration ensures that our materials are used in the most effective way, reducing capital and operating costs while maximising recovery of target ions, and lengthening the effective life of the materials.
